The Evangelical Theological Seminary (ETS) in the Czech Republic is opening an intermediate-level online course in Biblical Hebrew this September, for students who have mastered the basics and want to read the original text more independently. The follow-up course builds on an introductory offering and is aimed at those who can already read Hebrew script and recognise the main parts of speech. Announced through Církev bratrská's online portal on 4 August, the course is now open for registration.
ETS serves the theological formation needs of the Czech evangelical and free-church movement, including Církev bratrská (the Church of the Brethren), a minority denomination in a largely secular society. Investing in biblical languages helps the movement train pastors, missionaries and lay leaders who can work directly with the source texts of Scripture rather than relying solely on translations. Delivering the course online over Zoom makes it accessible to students across the country, well beyond the seminary's classrooms.
The course runs for twelve weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings from 18:00 to 19:30, beginning 16 September 2026, and is led by Ráchel Slunečková. Participants will study Hebrew irregular verbs and then put their growing grammar to work reading the narrative text of the book of Jonah, so that further grammar study is tied directly to practical work with the biblical text. Basic reading ability and familiarity with nouns, adjectives, prepositions, numerals and regular verb stems are expected, and home preparation is required; the course fee is 2,700 CZK.
