A Czech edition of Alister McGrath's widely used introduction to Christian theology is on its way, and its publication is the occasion for an Evangelical Forum built around a conversation with the author. Organisers say the event will run in a hybrid online and in-person format, combining live contributions from Professor McGrath with discussions led by Czech speakers. The programme is to take up the sources and the shape of systematic theology in Czech, and to ask about the state and future of theological education in the country's churches.
McGrath is a British theologian and scientist, a former professor at Oxford, and the author of more than fifty books spanning theology, the natural sciences and the spiritual life. He is widely known as a biographer of C. S. Lewis and as one of the most prominent critics of the so-called New Atheism, having debated Richard Dawkins in public as well as Christopher Hitchens and Daniel Dennett. His Christian Theology, first published in 1994 and since issued in a series of expanded editions, is among the most widely used introductions to the discipline worldwide.
The Czech edition is to be published by Návrat domů under the title Brána do teologie ("A Gate into Theology"). Organisers say the forum will also examine how theology — and the absence of it — makes itself felt in the ordinary life of Czech congregations, a question they treat as central to where those churches go next. The invitation was published by the Church of the Brethren (Církev bratrská), one of the Czech Republic's free church denominations, and the forum is announced under the banner Evangelikální fórum 2027.
