A free evangelical congregation on the shores of Lake Geneva is taking its worship out of the church building and into one of the most unlikely venues in Switzerland: the concert hall of Boullard Musique in Morges, the country’s largest musical instrument store. The Worship Night, organised by the Église (FREE) Gospel Center La Côte, will be held on 23 October at 8pm in a room that can hold up to two hundred people, in partnership with the television channel DieuTV and other sponsors.
“Our desire is really to gather widely around Jesus, beyond our different churches and sensibilities, to live together a great evening of praise and worship,” said Christophe Reichenbach, pastor of the Gospel Center La Côte in Gland and one of the instigators of the event. The congregation is openly grateful to its host: Timothée Rochat, one of the church’s drummers, is among the managers of Boullard Musique. “We are hugely grateful that they are open to hosting this worship concert. We benefit from their stage, their infrastructure and the presence of a professional for the sound system,” Reichenbach said.
The musical programme brings together the groups Echo Genève and the GCLC Worship Band, with Luc Dumont — a Québécois pastor and songwriter with several albums to his name — bringing what the organisers describe as a spiritual impulse on the theme of worship. Friday evening was chosen deliberately: youth groups along the Lake Geneva coast and further afield typically meet on Friday nights, and the hope is that they will come together for the evening.
Reichenbach points to the Psalms for why the evening matters. “Worship leads to the heart of God, because God is enthroned amid the praises of his people,” he said, citing Psalm 22. The congregation had held a Worship Night at the same venue in February 2019; a second was planned but had to be cancelled because of the Covid pandemic. Entry this time is free and no booking is required.
