North America holds the largest concentration of free evangelical Christians in the IFFEC family. Three major bodies — each with distinct roots, styles, and emphases — carry the tradition across the United States and Canada.
Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC)
The Evangelical Covenant Church was founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrants who carried the Mission Friends revival tradition from Sweden to the North American Midwest. Today the ECC encompasses more than 900 congregations in the United States and Canada with active global mission engagement on five continents. It describes itself as a "denomination that does not require conformity on secondary issues, but does require faithfulness on the primary issues" — the Alliance principle expressed as institutional DNA.
The ECC has been one of the most visible bodies in IFFEC for its commitment to racial reconciliation, multicultural ministry, and women's leadership. It ordained the first woman to serve as its president (Tammy Swanson-Draheim, nominated for a second term in 2026) and in 2026 marks 50 years since women's ordination began in the denomination. Its global partnership work — through Covenant World Relief, Paul Carlson Partnership, and Covenant Kids Congo — reaches some of the world's most vulnerable communities.
Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA)
The EFCA, formed in 1950 through the merger of two immigrant free-church streams (the Evangelical Free Church and the Free Mission), is now among the fastest-growing denominations in North America. It plants hundreds of new churches annually and sends missionaries through ReachGlobal to more than 40 countries. Its Statement of Faith, revised in 2008, is a model of the primary/secondary distinction: strong and clear on the essentials, deliberately silent on secondary matters (including baptism mode and the millennium, where it explicitly grants freedom).
The EFCA's ReachGlobal mission arm has some of the most long-standing and deep partnerships with free evangelical and adjacent bodies in the Global South — particularly in Congo, the Philippines, Latin America, and East Africa.
Evangelical Free Church of Canada (EFCC)
The EFCC, founded in 1917 and centred in western Canada, maintains close partnership with the EFCA while embodying the tradition in a distinctively Canadian context. With over 160 congregations, active church planting, and mission engagement through ServeBeyond, the EFCC contributes significantly to the IFFEC family's capacity in North America. Its partnership with the Evangelical Free Church of the Philippines (EFCP) is one of the most active bilateral relationships in the family.
Together these three bodies represent not only the largest IFFEC constituency in terms of membership but also some of the most generous supporters of global free evangelical mission.
