A church-run summer school in Ngabé, on the Congo River a few hours north of Brazzaville, closed its 2026 term on 30 September with 70 pupils, Equmeniakyrkan reported. Lessons were held five times a week during the second half of the summer holidays.

The project was organised with local authorities, the town’s teachers, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), a local bakery and a tailor. Pupils who attended to the end received a school uniform and the materials they needed, and the books left over were added to the school library for the new academic year. UNFPA’s local representative is a member of the EEC, Equmeniakyrkan’s sister church in the Republic of the Congo.

The organisers had first planned a literacy group for adults, but found it difficult to motivate them, so they invited more young people who had fallen outside the school system. At the closing ceremony several people came forward and asked for the summer school to be repeated next year. Equmeniakyrkan, a Swedish free church, said the experience with the local team of teachers, the school inspector, the tailor and the transport support from the bakery made another term feasible.
