Masked men opened fire on a church funeral in the village of Hmoud in Jordan's Karak Governorate, south of Amman, killing seven people and wounding 28 others. The World Evangelical Alliance condemned the attack in a statement issued on 23 October 2026, describing it as violence against the God-given right to life and personal security. The alliance rejected all forms of violence "without qualification", whatever motives or justifications are claimed for them.
The statement was issued by the WEA's secretary general, the Rev. Botrus Mansour, and combined condemnation with an appeal for restraint. The alliance extended its solidarity to the victims, the injured and their families, and asked Christians around the world to pray for them and for Jordan. It also asked for prayer for the country's leaders and security services, that they would be granted wisdom and that Jordan's security and stability would be preserved.
The WEA warned against using the tragedy to deepen divisions, saying that any attempt to incite sectarian tension or spread hatred must be firmly rejected. It described Jordan's national unity and social cohesion as foundations of the country's stability, and said the right to life and security, the freedom to worship and the protection of places of worship are responsibilities shared by the state and by society. The statement closed with the Apostle Paul's words in Romans 12:18, urging believers to live at peace with everyone as far as it depends on them.
