The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) is marking 180 years since its founding with a season of prayer, celebration and commitment this September. The alliance has invited churches and believers around the world to join two events: an online Prayer, Celebration and Commitment gathering on Wednesday 23 September, and a worldwide WEA Day on Sunday 27 September.
Founded in 1846 in London, the WEA is one of the oldest and largest bodies serving the global evangelical movement, bringing together national and regional evangelical alliances from more than 140 countries. The anniversary theme, drawn from Mark 2, centres on the story of the paralysed man whose friends carried him to Jesus and the call to “pick up your mat and walk.”
The 23 September online gathering will be offered at two times — 10:00 UTC and 19:00 UTC — so that participants across different time zones can take part. WEA Day on 27 September is designed for local churches and groups to mark the anniversary within their own communities, with details to be confirmed nearer the time. The alliance is asking those who wish to take part to register their interest in advance.
